Strasbourg, April 23, 2024 at 5:30 p.m.
French-Jewish voices to weigh, even if modestly, on the EU/Israel agreement,
in order to progress as quickly as possible towards a ceasefire in Gaza
We are meeting today in response to an appeal by a number of French Jews
attached to Europe (some of whom are specialists in the study of the Holocaust) who
have been inspired by various initiatives such as that of the Une Autre Voix Juive and
a group of around 300 Jews who have already taken public positions*.

We wish to state from the outset our attachment to the existence of the State of Israel
and demand the release of the Israeli hostages in the hands of Hamas, responsible
for an anti-Jewish mass murder on 7 October.
We also demand the release of the Palestinian hostages who are languishing in
Israeli prisons, in most cases without trial.
We are opposed to the criminal and suicidal policy of the State of Israel in Gaza and
the West Bank.

We are profoundly hurt by the death of 32,000 Gazans and more than 100,000
wounded, and by the inhuman fate inflicted on these brothers and sisters in humanity
(with the cynical help of AI).

We simply and painfully note that the warnings we have been issuing for at least
thirty years have been confirmed. The warnings about the authoritarian and racist
excesses of the State of Israel (which we value as much as any other French citizen
born Jewish). Together with us also other much more illustrious personalities, such
as Y. Leibowitz, had predicted it as far back as the 1980s.
Israel will continue to become unlivable and will continue to be divided in order to
violently oppose the "brothers" who live there.
Knowing that we do not feel ourselves to be the "brothers" of death-mongers such as
the revisionist Zionists who will now achieve their goal: openly sowing the seeds of
death for other Jews.
We are firmly committed to respecting international law:
resolutions of the UN General Assembly and Security Council; recent decisions of the
International Court of Justice.
Remember that EU-Israel agreements are subject to conditions, in particular respect
for human rights. Economic support for Israel (including arms supplies) is helping to
intensify and prolong the war in Gaza. They make Europe responsible for the
disaster, described by the ICJ as possible genocide. This support and these
deliveries must be suspended.
This cycle of violence is fuelling anti-Semitism throughout the world. Equally, a future
based on war risks disaster for the seven million Jews in Israel, and represents the

greatest danger to the Jewish population worldwide. The only way out is to stop the
war, followed by negotiations for a just and lasting peace.
This is why we would like to try, with your help, to influence, in a modest way, the EU-
Israel Association Agreement to encourage an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
Thank you for your attention and support.
